Abstract
This study aimed to analyze risk factors for suicidal ideation and attempt among North Korean refugee women based on Joiner"s interpersonal theory of suicide (2007). Social exclusion was used as an indicator of "Thwarted Belongingness", and employment status was used as an indicator of "Perceived Burdensomeness". Trauma exposure was used as an indicator of "Acquired Capability". A convenience sample of 212 North Korean refugee women was analyzed for this study. Results of multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that North Korean refugee women with suicidal ideation had significantly higher social exclusion and trauma exposure than those without suicide risk. Compared with those with only suicidal ideation, North Korean refugee women with suicide attempt were more likely to be unemployed. However, there was no significant association between trauma exposure and suicide attempt. Based on the findings, we made suggestions regarding social welfare policies and practices to prevent suicide among North Korean refugee women.
